Description: Scroll, mounted and framed, ink and colour on gold-flecked paper, 32.6 x 35.2 cm. Inscribed and signed, with two seals of the artistCatalogue note: A leading conservative artist in Peking in the 1930s and 1940s, Xu Cao's zestful brushwork and interest in dramatic figural styles which were cultivated by populist artists, celebrating heroes, sages and religious figures, are exemplified in the attitudes of his figures. Xu Cao, who served as vice-president of the Peking Painting Academy charged as a rightist in 1957, disappeared and later died.
