Project Description

Catalogue note: Wolf Kahn is a German-born American Painter. Known for his vivid and colourful landscapes, the artist's unique blend of Realism and formal discipline of Colour Field abstractions sets his work apart. The fusion of colour, spontaneity and representation has produced rich, expressive work of atmospheric qualities in pastel and oil paint. “I am always trying to get to the danger point, where colour either becomes too sweet or too harsh; too noisy or too quiet,” he said of his approach to painting.Born in Stuttgart, Germany, Kahn emigrated to the United States in 1940. He studied under Abstract Expressionist painter Hans Hofmann, and also graduated with a BA from the University of Chicago in 1951. In 1953, he had his first solo exhibition at Hansa Gallery. A recipient of the United States National Medal of Art in 2017, Kahn's work is held in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C. The artist currently lives and works in New York and Vermont.
