Signed and dated 'William Wood 1997' (on the reverse)Catalogue note: With restrained movement and muted tonality, William Wood’s minimal, abstract paintings are a meditation on the ethereal. The rhythmic freeform images are built up slowly with cyclical swirling strokes. The translucent surfaces, composed of oil and wax, are the product of the painstaking accumulation of layers. Like watching smoke curling slowly upwards, viewers find themselves immersed in the visual progression of the repetitive forms. William Wood lives and works in New York City. He has exhibited from coast to coast and internationally and has been reviewed in publications such as the New Yorker, the New York Times, ARTnews, Artforum, Art in America and the San Francisco Chronicle. His work is included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Dallas Museum of Fine Arts; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and Harvard University, among others.
