Catalogue note: This painting was reproduced as an advertisement for the Hercules Powder Company, formerly a chemical and munitions manufacturing company based in Wilmington, Delaware.Walter Beach Humphrey was an American artist and illustrator. He attended Dartmouth College and then studied at the Art Students League. Working primarily in painting, Humphrey developed a personal style that reflected light-hearted family-friendly content. His work was featured on covers of magazines such as The Saturday Evening Post. He also did book illustrations, portraits and other artwork, including murals. Many of Humphrey’s Saturday Evening Post covers can be found online, and there is a modest collection of prints of his work in the Norman Rockwell Museum archive.A resident and active member of New Rochelle, New York, a well-known artist colony and home to many of the top commercial illustrators of the day, he also served on The New Rochelle Art Association and the New Rochelle Council on The Arts. Humphrey died in New York, in October 1966, at the age of 73.
