Project Description
Description: Watercolour on paper, 27.9 x 19 cm. Signed in Bengali (lower left)Catalogue note: A distinguished artist of the Bengal School, Kshitindranath Mazumdar studied at the Government School of Art in Kolkata under the tutelage of Abanindranath Tagore in 1905. His paintings were marked by a strong note of lyricism - the delicate, romantic style as seen in his watercolour wash works combined with rhythmic pictorial arrangements define Mazumdar's signature style. The precise yet soft and fluid outlines as seen in his paintings often give his subjects a weightless, ethereal quality. An artist who considered art as a form of devotion, he drew his subjects from literary, religion and mythology. Mazumdar had three retrospectives held in Varanasi in 1964 and 1949, and in Kolkata in 1963. His works were exhibited in solo and group exhibitions held in the United States, Europe and India. During his lifetime, Mazumdar received several awards and honours including an honorary doctoral degree from Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata, and a Merit Award from the Bengal Congress Committee in 1963. The artist passed away in 1975.
