Project Description
Description: Oil on canvas, 60.9 x 81.2 cm. Signed 'Alpuy 92' (upper right)Catalogue note: A Uruguayan artist known for both his paintings and sculpture. Alpuy’s distinctive style of painting was marked by a use of stacked forms representing buildings, figures, and other objects. Born on January 27, 1919 in Uruguay, Alpuy moved to Montevideo in 1935 and began studying under Joaquín Torres-Garcia, whose work had profoundly influenced his own. His early paintings consisted of still lifes and landscapes, executed with heavy impasto. Gradually, his works took on the more stylised approach and pre-Columbian influence for which he is now known. In 1961, Alpuy moved to New York, where resided for more than forty years. The artist died on April 5, 2009 in New York, NY. Today, his works are held in the collections of the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Morgan Library and Museum in New York, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, among others.
