Catalogue note: Johann Mongels Culverhouse was a Dutch painter. Born in Rotterdam, Holland in 1825, he moved to New York at 24 years of age.The artist created paintings that appealed to the American art market, and focused on genre scenes and idealised landscapes. However, his strongest influences as a painter was 17th century Dutch art. Culverhouse is well known for his paintings of night market scenes, also known as "candlelight paintings", which was a popular theme amongst the Dutch painters of the 17th century. The artist died in New York City around 1895.
