Project Description
Description: Scroll, mounted and framed, ink and colour on paper, 53 x 83.5 cm. Signed with one sealCatalogue note: One of the most innovative artists of the New Ink Painting movement in Hong Kong, Shanghai-born Irene Chou studied under Zhao Shao’ang and Lui Shou Kwan when she settled in Hong Kong in 1949. Lui's theories of New Ink Painting inspired her to move away from conventional Chinese styles to abstract forms. She explored and experiment with different media and techniques. Her abstract paintings from the 1980s onwards became bold and more energetic, often with a sense of primordial creation and cosmic vision. After a stroke in 1991, Chou relocated to Australia where she continued to paint. The artist passed away in 2011.
