Catalogue note: Born 1942, Hunan. Gu Gan graduated from the Central Art Academy in 1962. This work is from his earlier period, when he travelled to the Yungang Grottes to study the Buddhist wall murals. His style has evolved from more figurative to more calligraphic. Gu has held solo exhibitions in United States, Japan, United Kingdom, Canada and Hong Kong. His work is collected by the National Art Museum of China, Vienna National Museum, Köln Museum and British Museum.
