Project Description
Description: Oil on canvas, 78 x 56 cmCatalogue note: Carl Vilhelm Holsøe was born in Aarhus, Denmark. He studied at the Royal Academy in Copenhagen from 1882 to1884, and then at the Artist’s ‘Studieskole’ under Peder Severin Krøyer. Holsøe made his debut, in 1886, at the Charlottenberg December exhibition with an interior scene, a subject which he became renowned for throughout Scandanavia and rest of Europe. In his paintings, Holsøe used a realistic style to describe his interiors - revealing a precise depiction and strong structural sense of the space through the artist's keen observation of the room and the light. Holsøe was also known for his landscapes, still lifes and flower paintings, all produced in the same clear, realist manner. The artist was awarded the Eckersberg Medal in 1901 (for Interior) and 1908 (for Evening), in Denmark and received various international awards including an honourable mention at the Universal Exposition in Paris in 1889 and a gold medal at the Munich Exhibition of 1891. His works can be found in museums in Copenhagen and Munich.
