Signed 'AThieme' (lower right).Catalogue note: Anthony Johannes Thieme was a landscape and marine painter and a major figure of the Rockport School of American regional art. Born in Rotterdam, the artist received his formal training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rotterdam and Royal Academy of Fine Arts at The Hague.Known for his harbour scenes and townscapes of the Cape Ann region of Massachusetts, his style was influenced by Impressionism and the Dutch tradition of seascape painting. Thieme favoured painting en plein air because it allowed him to better capture the atmosphere’s fleeting effects. His work is held in the collections of the Boston Museum of Fine Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, among others. The artist died, a suicide, on 6 December 1954 in Connecticut at the age of 66.
