Description: Oil on canvas, unvarnished, unframed, 241.3 x 281.5 cm. Signed 'vi BEAUME' (towards the centre on the left), et inscrit 'LE SULTAN HAROUM/ EL RACHID UN JOUR / AYANT ORDONNE UNE / GRANDE CHASSE / DEUX /Catalogue note: A painter, lithographer and engraver, Émile Marie Beaume studied at the Fine Arts School in Paris with painters Fernand Cormon, François Flameng and Adolphe Déchenauld. In 1917, he was mobilised in Morocco by the French army. This trip profoundly influenced his work. He painted many street scenes, landscapes and portraits. Beaume received the First Grand Prix de Rome in 1921 for an oil on canvas entitled Ensevelissement de Saint Antoine. The artist later became a recognized master of wall decoration and fresco art, creating numerous monumental commissions for private mansions, casinos and public buildings. After the Second World War, Beaume decorated the palaces of Moroccan and Ethiopian families. Some of his paintings are preserved in the museum of Pézenas, his hometown.
